Devastating Earthquake In Chile

In the northern part of Chile near the Atacama Region, an 5.0 magnitude earthquake hit 40 kilometres northwest of Carrizal Bajo at 12:09 am on December 2nd, 2022. An aftershock earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 hit the city as well at 12:30 am. The depth of these earthquakes reached about 46 kilometers, reported by the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences. There was no immediate report of casualties; however, there were minor landslides near the epicenter. All of the people living near the coast were evacuated as a safety precaution. "Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin to member states. "No action is required." COVID-19 has also affected the area, as multiple hospitals have been ripped apart and families are in contact with more people. Over 150 people have tested positive for the virus since the natural disaster, and the number will only get worse.
