2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season

The official start of the Atlantic hurricane season is June 1, but it is starting early this year. Tropical storm Andres began to form off the west coast of Mexico on May 9, making it the first tropical disturbance of the season. Andres made history as the first storm to form that early in the calendar year, breaking the previous record of May 10 set by Adrian in 2017.

The average hurricane season has 14 named storms and 7 hurricanes, 3 of which will be severe Category 3+ hurricanes. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) decided that they will begin issuing its routine tropical weather outlooks and forecasts on May 15, to better serve the communities hit by severe tropical weather earlier in the year.

It only takes one storm to drastically impact someone's life, so the NHC tells people that being prepared is crucial. May 9-15 is Hurricane Preparedness Week, a time for people in hurricane-prone areas to prep their evacuation kits and review their evacuation plans. Some areas that were hit hard in 2020 are still recovering so it is important for those to replenish emergency supplies and prepare their homes.

There are no critical needs at this time, but organizations are trying to think about what people need most after a hurricane so they are ready to help at a moment’s notice.
