TUESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2020 - Dozens were injured and at least 7 people were confirmed dead after the 6.4 magnitude earthquake left Croatia rattled. Around 30 miles southeast of Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, numerous towns were impacted by the earthquake as they were covered in ruins and destruction. Emergency services and the military had to be deployed in excess due to the chaos which turned once well-functioning towns into piles of rubble within a few hours. Not only did the main earthquake hit central Croatia, but smaller earthquakes and tremors could be felt around the whole Balkan peninsula.
The Impact
This was the biggest earthquake recorded in Croatia in 2020. In addition to this new crisis, COVID-19 is also an ongoing problem, as Croatia has around 221,000 cases. The earthquake just amplified the crisis in Croatia, as they are having to shift around many of the affected individuals, specifically COVID-19 patients, to a sports arena in Zagreb as a makeshift hospital. People are still continuously being evacuated and rescued from the ruins. The military, police, and citizens are constantly searching for survivors. Citizens across Croatia have noted the severity of the destruction after seeing fellow citizens buried under what used to be churches, houses, schools, and buildings. Being labeled a “very serious” situation by the Croatian Red Cross, there are a few ways we can all help those who were badly affected.
Here are some ways we can help!
