Cyclone Ana:
Cyclone Ana, a category 5 cyclone, hit Fuji on January 24th and it lingered on in the country until February 5th. 1 person was confirmed to be dead and 5 more are reported to be missing. As a result of the cyclone, 10,000 people were left in emergency situations. Large amounts of damage was sustained to the country's infrastructure. Strong winds and rain caused severe flooding and the destruction of crops. Much of the country is still without electricity as the extent of the damage is still being assessed. Schools, shops, and many businesses have been closed for weeks and it is unknown when life will return to normal.
This is the third major cyclone to strike Fiji within the past month. As the country has continued to be bashed by cyclones, many people have lost their homes and way of lives without any knowledge of when things will go back to normal. The government has been trying to provide necessities and programs to the people in need, but it is shorthanded and the extent of the damage has been too large. Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, an avid supporter and outspoken leader on climate change, made a statement regarding the safety of his citizens and what this could mean for the rest of the world.
As there are still 2 major cyclones forming off the coast of Fiji, the country could still have further destruction to deal with. Furthermore, there are still 3 months left in the cyclone season, leaving much of the population worried. Total damage could lead to tens of billions of dollars before the dust is settled and the adverse effects of the disaster could even lead to major changes in the country. In these grueling times, numerous nearby countries have shown their support by lending resources in the rebuilding process. These countries include New Zealand, Australia, and many other Pacific countries.
