Haiti Earthquakes

On August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake developed, devastating the southern and western regions of Haiti. Port au Prince, the capital of the nation, is among the cities most affected. The parameters of the earthquake spanned nearly 80 miles, leaving 300 fatalities and over 2,000 wounded in its wake. Officials have been searching for those reported missing and transporting thousands to medical centers in hopes of mitigating the emergency.
"The destruction was everywhere. The help, nowhere," locals stress as the lack of aid becomes evident. A devastating example is the village of Toirac. The majority of Toirac civilians were attending a funeral when the quake struck. Currently, 20 people have been reported dead, and hundreds of the villagers were wounded just in Toirac. According to Michel Milord, who lost his wife to the earthquake, they have not received any help, nor do they expect any.
Another case is that of Jean Claude-Daniel, whose child disappeared after the region collapsed. "I will never see her again alive," Claude-Daniel says, "The earthquake destroyed my life. It took a child away from me." Furthermore, the region was also critically hit by Tropical Storm Grace which destroyed homes and injured thousands of civilians.
The nation has now declared a state of emergency as officials prepare for what is yet to come. With the recent assassination of the president, the Haitian government is unstable, unable to supply the disaster support that is needed. At the moment, The Les Cayes Airport, where necessary supplies are distributed to the regions, witnessed no sign of planes nor aid entering the port. "Everything is taking longer than usual … but in reality, very little is happening," said the AVSI Foundation regarding the situation in Haiti.
As such, Haiti and its people need your help. Hundreds, if not thousands, of Haitians are in a critical situation. Most have lost virtually everything: their homes, loved ones, and necessities such as food and water. If possible, consider donating to organizations like Samaritan's Purse (see link below), who are preparing relief supplies for the victims of this disaster.
