On August 19, Minnesota witnessed extensive fires as they expanded through several regions within the state. One of the most affected sectors was the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of Wilderness in northeast Minnesota. The wilderness area is one of the most popular districts across the nation due to its picturesque features; the unmanageable fire had spread over 14 miles in mere days.
The wilderness area is a million-acre property, and officials closely monitor it for potential hazards because of its size. They have taken action against the fires, and while they had significant success, more should be done. Firstly, the Wilderness area ceased issuing entry permits, closing all trails, campsites, canoe routes, and more. Officials have also transferred emergency personnel, 250 firefighters, and several other emergency units to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of Wilderness.
The emergency units are not the only ones helping fight the fires. Wilderness Officials have directed wilderness rangers to scour the area to make sure everyone is safe and evacuated. As reported by Minnesota Radio, rangers are in action as they sweep for civilians from the east to the west. Sheriff leaders have also ordered more than 200 homes, cabins, and properties around the area to be vacated until further notice.
Minnesota’s low humidity and drought-like temperatures are suspected of fueling this fire and others. The Greenwood Lake Fire, currently hitting both inside and outside the Wilderness Area, is another example.
The wilderness area is a national beauty, home to thousands of tourists, families, species, and nature that make it the way it is. With such fires cropping up, the region will face devastation if the locals do not receive outside assistance. Please consider heading over to the charity listed below and donating to the cause. Whatever it is you can donate will be greatly appreciated by the locals and officials in the area as they fight to keep their home the natural beauty it has always been.
