On October 17, 2022, Pakistan encountered an earthquake measured to be 5.8 in magnitude. It hit the province of Balochistan close to the cities of Harnai and Quetta, causing hundreds of injuries and about 20 fatalities, six of which were children. Officials continue to receive more unfortunate news as more and more casualties are reported around the nation.
The entire province was affected, but the district of Harnai was the most significantly devastated, suffering landslides, damage to buildings, and obstructed roadways. The authorities deployed rescue units that sought to help the area. Unfortunately, aid would never come until it was too late for countless.
A story in particular that reflects the severity of the incident is Mr. Rafiullah and his children of Harnai. According to reports, the quake was so powerful, his house completely collapsed. Rafiullah rushed home to pull out his sons; the two eldest managed to survive the collapse, but their one-year-old brother did not.
The circumstances of Mr. Rafiullah were not rare during the earthquake. Hundreds of homes crumbled to the ground, and mortality rates were severe.
With that in mind, consider donating to Pakistan and its people. The earthquake left hundreds and thousands dead, injured, lacking in resources, or with an even more precarious life. Advance to UNICEF.org where one can donate to the cause and further get involved.
