Sijara Earthquake

Updated: Oct 29, 2022

On October 16, 2022, a moderately powerful earthquake hit Sijara, Indonesia. It had a magnitude of 4.8 and a lighter aftershock of about 4.3, bringing severe repercussions to the region. According to officials, three people were confirmed to be dead and seven injured. Nearly two weeks later, officials continue to gain additional insight into the damages the earthquake wrought.

One of the principal details about the earthquake is that it struck just before dawn, causing mass panic as civilians attempted to flee. The Indonesian region, located within the Ring of Fire, is prone to earthquakes.

The Ring of Fire surrounds the Pacific Ocean from Indonesia to the Peru Chile Trench. Earthquakes are not the only natural occurrence that escalates there. The Ring is home to the strongest active volcanoes on Earth and other seismic events that put the Indonesian region in great danger.

Back in Indonesia, the aftermath of the quake was harsh. Released photos and videotapes show homes and businesses “covered in rock and mud” as thousands have collapsed. Other effects have made things worse for the people. Instantaneous lack of vital resources, cut-off communication, and limited access to more than three villages exacerbated the situation.

An example of the circumstances was the village of Karangasem, where the damages and casualties were appalling. According to Nengah Kertawa, head of Bunga village in Karangasem, almost 60% of the homes in Karangasem are now inhabitable.
