Typhoon In-fa

On July 29, 2021, the Category 2 Typhoon In-fa landed in the Putuo district of Zhoushan and the Henan province. The city of Zhoushan is a major port located in Zhejiang, home to many families and businesses that contribute to the area; Henan province is also one of the leading business sectors in the region. Means of transportation like planes, the metro system, and trains temporarily discontinued operations, minimizing possible injuries and fatalities.

Governmental agencies issued an announcement on July 26, warning the general public about the storm and its hazards. The agency stated the following: The localized heavy rainfall could cause flash floods and landslides. Additionally, the Henan province and surrounding areas are forecasted to experience up to 200 mm of rain, a quantity above the average precipitation of several months in mere days. Government officials and organizations continue to help the locals by providing essentials such as food and shelter as they confront the consequences Typhoon In-fa has left behind.

According to local agencies and corporations, the death toll in the Henan province has reached 69, excluding five people missing and hundreds suffering from other casualties and injuries. The Typhoon is also estimated to have been the cause of approximately two billion dollars in property damage and the forced relocation of nearly one million individuals without factoring in the numbers retracted from the data. Studies have shown that the yearlong floods around the area have killed at least 300 and have caused about $13 billion in local damages and injuries.

The media plays a significant role in broadcasting the destruction Typhoon In-fa has caused in various locations. Videos and photos of floods and rivers have circulated through Social Media as the storm successively struck Hangzhou Bay, Jiaxing, and near Shanghai, reaching winds of about 101kmph. Furthermore, state media has noted that provinces, such as Zhejiang, have reached emergency levels as evacuation incidents and casualties soared. These statistics have led to government officials relocating funds from fiscal reserves to help and provide for the affected areas and individuals within them. Local chief forecasters such as Gao Shuang Zhu have also called for stringent precautions against such, often life-threatening, rains.
